Riding the high of a successful private show, the troupe of Roadside Paradise returns to their normal circuit and their pursuit of the Guild of the Red Dragon. With V’s increase in power, Athena finds herself feeling more severe consequences of their bond, falling into a state of confusion and apathy that bespeaks damage to her very soul due to being tied to the karmic deity. Despite others warning her about the growing side effects, Athena’s biggest concern is surviving the bond long enough to save her sister Katrina.

Problems start within the troupe when playful competitions occur between V and his older brother Rajia as they bicker about who will take over running the circuit. But as magic becomes overwhelming around the carnival grounds, a terrifying development arises—Athena has developed her own magical abilities. Petrified by her own powers and still tethered to V’s growing strength, Athena begins to think that her continued presence is going to put the entire family of Roadside Paradise in jeopardy.

Atop the distrust within the troupe, Donovan’s plan seems to move forward, cloaked in the shadow of V’s concern about Athena’s volatile powers. And when they finally come face to face with the deity their enemy has at their disposal, Athena struggles with the understanding that the cost to save her sister from the Guild of the Red Dragon might be too much for her to bear.
